The Watersheds Program - Lake Cumberland Watershed

Description: The Lake Cumberland watershed is located primarily in southeast Kentucky. About 300 miles of the mainstem of the Cumberland River drain the watershed including about 110 miles of Lake Cumberland. That is just the 'backbone' of the watershed. There are more than 10,000 miles of streams and creeks.
Major tributaries in this segment are the Rockcastle River, Buck Creek, Beaver Creek, Pitman Creek, Big South Fork, Fishing Creek and Meadow Creek, White Oak Creek, Wolf Creek, Otter Creek and Beaver Creek. Lake Cumberland is a major contributor to economic prosperity in the region. The lake is used for recreation, hydropower and as a public water source. Although water quality is generally good the lake was assessed in 2000 as part of the Clean Lakes Program and was judged to be partially supporting for fish tissue consumption due to mercury.

Know what the major Cumberland River pollutant is? Well, it is the DIRT and
the other "stuff" from our yards, our roofs and our driveways that runs off
every time we have a good rain.
If we all kept our dirt in our own yards, the river would be a lot healthier
and safer for everyone.
Visit the Sediment page to learn more about Muddy Waters and what YOU can do
to keep your dirt at home.
